SDE: Gloomborn Champion

It’s HALLOWEEEEEN! Lemme tell you the spooky tale of the Gloomborn Champion…

Imagine you’ve spent a heroic career defending those who could not defend themselves, thwarting evil at every turn, combatting the forces of the Dark Consul and always fighting to make Crystalia a safe place for its citizens… and then you catch the wrong end of an ogre club, the sharp end of a kobold spear, or the unnerving glare of a giant killer mushroom, and next thing you know you’re dead… … … and then you’re not. A necromancer has tapped into dark and forbidden powers to raise you from the grave, intending to put you in charge of some of his less mentally capable minions. Sadly for him, his spell backfired! Instead of leaving you with your intellect but subservient to his whims, you’re in full control and you stand once more to fight evil! Well, as long as your leg doesn’t fall off… You’re a Gloomborn Champion!

As a creature of the night, you know the inner workings of the Dark Consul’s undead minions better than anyone other hero. After all, you’re kinda a zombie yourself at this point, even if you’re holding together better than some of those guys with their skin sloughing off. You do occasionally wonder what brains taste like, but by and large you’re all about putting the pointy end of your punch dagger directly into the face of evil.

The Gloomborn Champion is built to outright trash spawn points. More than any other hero he’s the bane of the Dark Consul’s hordes of minions. Granted, he doesn’t offer a heck of a lot when handling minibosses and bosses, but drop him on a spawn point and watch him go to town.

The champion rolls two Red dice for his strength/melee attack, which has a two square range. Three blue dice make up his armor and willpower, and two blue identify dexterity as his dump stat.  6 movement, 3 actions, 5 health, 1 potion – standard fare – along with an affinity for red crystals, and the Corpse Stench ability. Now, who knows how long you’ve been dead, but apparently you’ve forgotten your deodorant, because every time you take damage all adjacent enemies are affected by the Slow status effect as they gag and retch. Halving their movement means it’s harder for them to get away from you – As long as your team can keep you healed from a distance, you can effectively play a control tank. Conveniently, your fellow heroes are far too polite to react so vehemently, and completely ignore your posthumous aroma.

The real shiny from the Gloomborn Champion is his special attack. Taking up two of his three actions, Destroy Their Coffins reaches out two squares as an attack, and does two additional wounds against spawn points. Now is the time I’ll remind you that spawn points have three health, and with two red dice on the attack your Champion’s going to be connecting. The ability to remove a spawn point with a single attack roll is huge, and it’s compounded with the Champion’s potion ability…

Necromancer’s Bane grants the hero the ability Spawn Kill. For one turn, when an enemy model spawns within melee range, the hero immediately makes a melee attach against it. Remember, the Gloomborn Champion rolls two red strength dice before adding any equipment buffs, and has a two square attack range.  Even if you can’t get him close enough to attack the spawn point directly, you can counter the Dark Consul’s attempts to spawn defenders around it, and it also works as a failsafe should you (somehow) fail to destroy the spawn point when you attack it.

Finally, the Gloomborn Champion has an interested team buff aura in his special ability, Unfeeling Gloom. One action to trigger, and all friendlies within a three square aura are suddenly immune to all status effects. No Knockdown, no poison, no slow, no fire, no bane, no immobile – If your heroes like to bunch up, the Gloomborn Champion suddenly becomes a very handy team support model.

The Gloomborn Champion is an interesting offensive hero, with an unprecedented degree of anti-spawn point tech, and a little team buff in the mix. Aside from being  a fun model to paint, I think he’ll make an excellent addition to adventuring parties.
