CaptainCon 2019 Fundraiser!!

Every February, we have the privilege of teaming up with the New England Privateers to run a charity fundraiser at CaptainCon. Every year, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and contributors and to the open hearts of CaptainCon attendees, we raise thousands of dollars to make a difference for our chosen recipient. This is not only Lost Hemisphere’s way of giving back, but also an opportunity for the gaming community to support a worthwhile cause.

Each year we consider a number of charities, and we often like to choose one that has personal meaning. In the past we’ve supported the Hope Alzheimer’s Center, Rosie’s Place, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute – all wonderful agencies, and it has been an honor to help them do the good work they do. For 2019, we’re supporting a new charity.

The Asperger/Austism Network (AANE) is a non-profit working out of Watertown, MA, supporting individuals, families, and professionals who work with people with Asperger Syndrome or similar autism spectrum profiles to build meaningful, connected lives, through information, education, community, support, and advocacy.

The AANE is an inclusive community that also serves people with a variety of neurological differences, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Social Communication Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), or Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NVLD). AANE works with children, teens and adults, regardless of whether they have a formal, professional diagnosis. Further, the organization is committed to welcoming all individuals, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, or gender identification.

As a father with a child on the spectrum, I cannot tell you how many times I have come up against behavior that I simply don’t understand, or otherwise have difficulty comprehending as I try to be the best parent I can and help my child prepare for the life ahead. A group like the AANE can make all the difference not only for someone on the spectrum, but for those caring for them as well.

So where you come in?

There’s two ways you can help us in our mission to raise funds at CaptainCon.

ONE:

You can help bolster the prize pool. The Raffle has become a big part of CaptainCon over the years, with me standing on a chair and reading out ticket numbers as people recover from the Team Tournament on Saturday night. It’s an amazing feeling watching people choose their prizes, knowing that they’ve helped raise funds for a good cause.

Those prizes, though, have to come from somewhere. The Lost Hemisphere Prize Pool will be drained for raffle prizes, our sponsors will pitch in, and in previous years several amazing industry partners – including Privateer Press, Ninja Division, Wyrd, USAopoly, Army Painter, Games & Gears and more – have all helped fill the shelves. The NJ SOB’s are also once again stepping up to the plate with a fully painted army to be won.

So how about you? If you have something you think might be a great addition to the prize pool, drop me an email at gdaybloke@losthemisphere.com. New-In-Box stuff is always welcome, as are fully painted models that need a new home, and other things that are just plain cool. Maybe we can pull Aggyface away from her paintbrushes long enough to knit some legwarmers with Menofixes on them or something, who knows.

TWO:

Buy tickets. Simple as that.

If you’re coming to CaptainCon, please consider bringing a few extra bucks to buy some tickets. The goal here is to raise funds, and to do that, we need you to buy tickets. Buy tickets, hang around after the Team Tournament, win stuff. Your part in this is nice and straightforward!

If you’re not coming to CaptainCon, and you know someone who is, hit ’em up to act as your proxy. We’ll be posting pics of the prize table, so you’ll have an idea of what’s available, and can let them know in advance what you’re interested in should your numbers be drawn.

In either case, there will be a lot of prizes to be drawn, and we need to keep the line moving. Drop by the raffle table, check out the goodies, and have an idea in advance what  you might like to take home with you!

 

Expect updates as we sort out prizing, so you can have a better idea of what awaits you on the prize table. Let’s make this a good one.

 

Disclaimer: The point of the fundraiser is to raise as much money as possible. If someonewants to buy 200 tickets, I’m going to let them. All the tickets are mixed up, but there is still the possibility – however remote – that they may win half the prize table. That’s how raffles work. Last year one patron expressed disappointment that he saw several people win multiple prizes, while he was not that lucky. They had bought many tickets, and every ticket is just as likely to win as any other.

Other Disclaimer: This fundraiser is made possible by the hands of many volunteers. It wouldn’t be a thing without them, and I personally appreciate everything they do. Should they wish to buy tickets as well, they are permitted to do so. That said, as the person doing the actual drawing of tickets, the only person who’s not allowed to win something is… well, me. Someone bring me a consolatory doughnut when they do a Dunkin’ Donuts run on Friday or Saturday morning 😉
