  • RQ: Chuck Dogwood

Posted on May 8, 2020 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

So to the best of my knowledge, no-one in the Iron Kingdoms has successfully manufactured blue suede shoes, but some things just echo through all of time and space. Don’t believe me? Read Terry Pratchett’s Soul Music or Moving Pictures. In the post-apocalyptic setting of Riot Quest, the spirit of the King lives on through the man, the myth, the hoboiest of Orboros’ devotees, Chuck Dogwood.

    Riot Quest

Chuck is a Guard class hero for Riot Quest, meaning he’s there to help defend his teammates through the Safeguard ability. Perhaps moreseo than the game’s other Guards though, Chuck does so by inflicting some raw chaos on the map through his Teleportability, and theĀ Banishproperty of his “Whistling Staff”. I’m not sure if that means it has precision holes cut through it so it whistles when he swings it, or if he has to whistle himself to activate its function. Now I’m just picturing him whistling with moustache hairs stuck to his lip and it’s making a “Pfffrrtrrfft” sound and I’m amused.

BothĀ TeleportandĀ Banishhave similar effects. The first teleports a friendly model, within 2 spaces, to a random Treasure Beacon. The second teleports an enemy model, on a successful hit, to a random Treasure Beacon.

Now, there is the potential that it can backfire and and put your teammate in an unfavorable spot or an enemy model into a favorable position, but in terms of getting someone out of imminent danger or messing with an opponent’s attempts at board control, Chuck Dogwood is all set to add some delightful chaos to your games of Riot Quest.

    Hordes

A 4pt Circle Orboros Blackclad solo, Chuck isĀ  a support piece that will make your constructs more amazing thanks to one simple rule:

Veteran Leader [Construct]: While in this model’s command range, friendly Faction construct models gain +1 to attack rolls.

So every construct, be it a Warbeast, Unit or Solo, gets a very handy little buff. This makes Chuck a nice compatriot for Bradigus or Baldur.

Chuck’s Whistling Staff retains theĀ Banishrule, though it’s only a 1″ placement. That’s still enough to finagle someone into or out of a charge lane or control area, but given Chuck’s comparative squishiness you may want to rely on his spellcasting instead.Ā Craft Talismanlets you ramp up the effectiveness of a friendly warlock’s spellcasting,Ā Puppet Master gives you some reroll potential, andĀ Phase Slide echoes the chaos of the Riot Quest as a personal teleport for Chuck, having you select a target spot 5″ away, and then scattering d3″ in a random direction.

Chuck Dogwood introduces an element of whimsical chaos to both Riot Quest and Hordes as a support model, and is available for order through your FLGS or preferred online retailer.Ā  Support local if you can, keep hobbying, and for cryin’ out loud, wash your hands.

  • Hope springs eternal: The Well of Orboros

Posted on April 19, 2019 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

You’re a Reeve, in service to the Circle Orboros. You’ve learned from the elders of your family about Orboros, the Wyrm, the danger presented by civilization encroaching into the wild places. You’ve served in battle at the call of the Potents, and barely escaped with your life from everything from misshapen blight monsters and enormous trolls, and even witnessed a gatorman become a demigod. You weep for the future of Caen, fear that the world you live in will not be destroyed before your grandchildren are even born, but the druids tell you not to worry and present an incredibly lame pun about hope springing eternal, pointing at the magical floating rock that somehow overflows with fresh, sparkling water despite it having no external source. It’s like a well decided it didn’t want to be a hole in the ground anymore, and decided to be a well hovering above ground. Whatever, you’re just happy to have somewhere to brush your teeth.

One of the best things about unboxing Black Anchor Heavy Industries models is the amazing box art that’s pretty much invisible unless you can angle the camera just right. Today we take a squizz at the Well of Orboros!

  • Tharn Blood Shaman

Posted on February 4, 2019 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

This post is being written Saturday night, because Lord knows I’ve got enough going on on Sunday. Aside from the fact that I work Sundays, it’s also Enormous Sportsball Day for those who follow such things, and you just know Northblade’s going to be wearing a Patriots jersey while many others would just be happy to seeĀ anybody other than the Patriots win this year’s Superbowl. Frankly, I hope you cheered for whichever team you personally prefer, and whether they won or not, I hope you had a great Sunday. Meanwhile, here’s a quick unboxing of the Tharn Blood Shaman.

The Tharn Blood Shaman joins Iona, Brighid and Caul in fleshing out the Tharn aspects of the Circle Orboros with new characters. She’s a Warlock Attachment, and a spellcaster in her own right. She can reduce the cost of one of her warlock’s spells throughĀ Harmonious Exaltation, cast one of her warlock’s spells – significantly increasing the functional range of the spell – throughĀ Spell Slave, and she can slit the throat of one of her allies to empower another, bending the laws of probability throughĀ Blood Ritual. Given that she’s Tharn, a feral tribe of cannibals of mutable physiognomy, the fact that she ignores laws shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Four components, keeping it nice and simple. Privateer’s resin work continues to shine, with plenty of great detail throughout the main body

New Month, New Target! Frankly, I love when we get to do spellslingers and such as a Target, because I get to spend the entire time I’m writing up the post humming Queen’s “A Kind of Magic” to myself as I type. It’s the simple pleasures, really. A refined crop of entries this month, starting with the dude in the pink cape.

Krueger was determined that if he couldn’t be the most powerful Potent in the Circle, he’d at least be the prettiest. I’d ask Dieson to explain himself, but I’m not sure I want to šŸ˜‰

Ah, a new month, a new Target gallery… I wasn’t sure how much participation we’d see this month, but I’m glad to see we didn’t come up empty handed.

    …

GET IT? EMPTY HANDED? Because this month’s challenge was to showcase models with not holding any weapons! HAH! I slay me…

    (*ahem)

    Alright, on with the show…

I encourage creative interpretation of the monthly targets, but Lord Bubonicus just skipped the empty hands thing entirely by painting models that had no hands at all. I’m sure Cyriss would be pleased with his Servitors and Objective Marker.

  • Circle Orboros: Command Book

Posted on March 14, 2017 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

The Circle Orboros has always had a special place in my fanboy heart. Yes, I’m dedicated to the glory of Menoth in all things, yes, I have spent time in the forests of Ios meditating at the Fane of Scyrah, but let’s all be honest here, werewolves are one of the coolest supernatural/mythical beasties out there, tapping into the feral side of humanity and bringing out the predator within, while at the same time balancing it out with an uncontrollable urge to sniff each other’s butts and urinate on fire hydrants. Thus, while Warmachine has always been my preferred system, I’ve constantly found myself looking at the druids of Orboros over the years. Accordingly, last month’s “Circle Christmas”, complete with the new MkIII Command book, made me smile.

  • Kaya the Wildheart

Posted on March 8, 2017 7:00 am by gdaybloke 3 Comments

Why just take a picture of one blister, when I can take a picture of two? Kaya the Wildheart has dropped, as of course did Una the Skyhunter and Horgle the Anvil, but Horgle wasn’t Orborosy enough to squeeze into the pic. Una we’ve covered in the past, using the model that was released last year, but Kaya the Wildheart adds a new level of pupper with her wolf, Laris, growing large enough to be a steed. Wolf riders aren’t unfamiliar to the Circle Orboros – Tharn women ride wolves into battle, and Morraig’s been leaping into the fray paws first for some time, but this is the first Warlock who’s decided “You know what, I want me some of that doggo action”.

  • Loki

Posted on February 27, 2017 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

To suggest that February has been something of a Circle Christmas isn’t entirely off base. There’s more Circle blog posts coming with the release of the Circle Orboros Command Book and Kaya the Wildheart, Una the Falconer hit general release, and then there’s this bad boy. With one of the most fun poses of all of the Warpwolf models, character or otherwise, Loki just exudes menace, and that spiked hook doesn’t help matters at all. I’m pretty sure he failed his puppy training class, but even more impressive than this great looking model and its amazing rules is how easy he is to assemble…

  • Theme Week: How I Got My Tharn On! by TheGreatGaspy

Posted on January 19, 2017 7:00 am by gaspy Comment

With Privateer Press dropping a PDF full of theme forces so that every faction has at least one to goof around with while we’re waiting for all the Command books to release, things are pretty much sunshine and rainbows of excitement here in the Gdaycave. To celebrate, each day this week a guest contributor is sharing their thoughts on one of the theme forces. Today’s contribution is fromĀ TheGreatGaspy, last seen trying to pluck a Rotterhorn.

If you missed the theme force PDF, you can find it here: Linky!

How I got my Tharn On!

    Ā TheGreatGaspy

I have always liked the Tharn, even that brute Kromac, despite his stealing a certain axe from a certain chieftain that is its rightful owner. The Tharn for me personally were always more interesting than the so-called blackclads and druids. Keep your petty mysticism and magics, I will take the blood-thirsty, heart-eating, tree cannibals! So of course I am happy to see the first theme force available to Circle is The Devourer’sĀ  Host.

First thing’s first: what lovely toys can we take! Any Tharn units/models (kinda goes without saying), The Death Wolves, Shifting Stones, Gallows Groves, the Lord of the Feast, living non-character warbeasts, and Ghetorix. That gives you a pretty decent list of of troops to pull from, with both ranged and melee options. The question then becomes; what do I get for limiting myself to a bunch of unkempt barbarians? The new theme forces are pretty simple: take so many points of X and get a free Y, add one army benefit and a situationally useful ability.

This pattern holds true for The Devourer’s Host: for every full 20 points of Tharn models/units you take, you may include a free Tharn unit attachment or small or medium-based Tharn solo (free models don’t count towards points spent). This is pretty wild, as Tharn aren’t known for being cheap. You can easily get Chieftains or White Manes to increase your killing power, simply for fielding the more aggressive elements in circle. Losing the Chieftain in a ravager unit hurts a lot less if he didn’t cost you any points to begin with.

Benefit the second: your battle group gains snacking! I am primarily a troll player. I love snacking. Not only do I heal when I kill you, but you are removed from the game as well…? Count me in! Snacking on the rather squishy Circle beasts may seem a bit underwhelming but should someone fail to kill one of those beasts, it is quite capable of removing a fair amount of damage (think Ghetorix or Warpwolf Sstalkers for a minute) and come back swinging damn near fresh.

Benefit the third: for every 10 points of TharnĀ  in your army you gain one corpse token. Now here is where things get tricky: “For every 10 points of tharn in your army”… Nowhere does it mention models you got for free. This means it is quite possible to end up with a fair number of corpse tokens on key models to start your tide of death rolling. You can load up your White Manes or Lord of the Feast… Hell, if you are really cheeky, Kromac2 has the heart eater rule too, and he loves some corpse tokens!

Sadly, it can’t all be gravy: something has to give. This list is aggressive and violent. You do not get the benefits of the Druids of Orboros clouds, the Manikin forests, or much of the other defensive tech found in-faction. This combined with generally low armourĀ  means you need to get into position and be doing damage quickly. That said, tree walker and pathfinder go a long way to covering those weaknesses.

All in all I am excited to try a few different builds with my Tharn, and if any of you have any interesting lists or tricks I’d like to hear them!

Posted on December 30, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke 1 Comment

Final post for 2016, and it’s one of the most anticipated models of the year. Every since the Storm Raptor was first teased folks were all giddy with anticipation about the enormous birdie would do. Circle Orboros was getting its second Gargantuan and the concept, the rules, the model design all had people making speculative “OoooOOooo” noises. An ambitious project from all angles, even those of us who seek the destruction of the druids in purifying flame were super keen to see how the model would be executed. Thankfully, Privateer loves us and did an amazing job.
