  • Tharn Wolf Rider Champion & Knights Exemplar Officer

Posted on December 21, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

I fear I must submit myself to the local Scrutator for a wracking… it’s been two weeks since I was last able to dedicate some time to painting, a sin made all the worse by Tuesday’s blog post where I mentioned putting in a little painting time every day…but the Lost Hemisphere Prize Pool continues to grow, more stuff for the prize table at CaptainCon, as Privateer Press gives us some awesome new officers with which to beat up our opponents. Today we’re taking a quick look at a devout Menite, and a savage Tharn. In the war for the fate of Urcaen, which side to stand on?

The Knights Exemplar Officer is a unit attachment for your… yep, you guess it, Knight’s Exemplar. Six guys in full plate rocking around in full plate with relic blades? Already pretty badass, but it’s time for a woman’s touch.

  • Megalith

Posted on December 5, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Whoomp! There it is! The rockingest rock dude this side of a Woldwrath, Megalith is back with a brand new sculpt. Crisp cast resin bits mean the Circle Orboros’ shale star is able to beat the basalt out of his foes without breaking your back weighing down your army transport. Don’t take this schmexy new sculpt for granite, Baldur’s favourite walking boulder is ready to branch out, if you twig on my meaning. Let the idea take root, nature’s wrath is ready to get georomantic and delivery some stata-fired biffing on those who would gainsay the words of Wurmwood.

  • Una the Skyhunter

    una2_05

With the new all-grown-up Warlocks released for early sale at Warmachine Weekend (and again for the Black Friday sales at PP’s online store!), everyone’s been very excited about their potential, their impact on the global competitive meta, and in once case in particular, the chance to relive Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds by flooding the board with winged death as Una the Skyhunter soars onto the tabletop. I have to think she must be in constant jealousy of Aurora. Maybe one day Una will earn her own wings…

But for now, let’s look at her model.

    una2_04

A grand total of three components, Una is straightforward to assemble, while at the same time covered in beautiful detail.

“You know what? Those Druids should be riding enormous goats,” said no Morrowan ever. “Oh, like, I just wish there was some way for those Devourer worshippers to run around faster, so we could get more exercise trying to chase them down,” said no Exemplar ever. “What are we going to do with all these bloody bodybuilding ibex?,” said some canny potent.

    Suddenly, Druid Mist Riders.

  • The Ominpotents New Toys: Baldur and the Stoneshaper

Posted on September 7, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

It’s been a good time to be a Warmachine player lately. We’ve seen the pre-release Warcasters at GenCon (which I had to buy each of, because they each came with an exclusive pin, because Privateer’s head pin maestro Mike Ryan clearly has it out for my wallet), we’ve even had the finished Viktor spoiled online by Dallas Kemp, who smells lovely and is a charming fellow and totally didn’t threaten to both Amon2’s paintjob if I didn’t say nice things about him. Not that I know anything about an impending Amon2, but hey, a guy can dream. Hordes players! That was the point! You’re not forgotten! We talked about Ghetorix’s resculpt last week, and today we’re taking a gander at the recently released Baldur the Stonecleaver resculpt, and the Blackclad Stoneshaper. Yes, they were July releases. We’re working on catching up with all the things!

  • Ghetorix Reborn

Posted on September 2, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

I’ve been a fan of the Character Warjack kits that took advantage of the existing non-character plastic kits, mainly because it maintains a sense of uniformity on machines of war. Warjacks like Scourge of Heresy, Triumph and Torch are supposed to have been perfectly normal jacks-of-the-line until something twinged in their cortexes and they’ve developed a stronger personality, picked up an alternative weapon, or otherwise decided that they really like doing something a little different. With the Warbeasts it’s a little further of a stretch to use the exact same kits – it’s a boon for packing in foam, for certain, but these are unique, living creatures. Accordingly, the new Character Warbeast sculpts make me happy. Look, it’s Ghetorix!

  • Death Wolves

Posted on February 12, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Now that CaptainCon photodumps are out of the way I can get back to doing one of the things I enjoy most – showing you shiny things! The Death Wolves were one of the surprises from Hordes: Exigence, and the rules were initially given mixed reviews, but they have ardent adherents and people who’ve put in the time to make them terrors of their local metas.

Of course, the real champions out there are the ones that looked at the amount of detail on the models and said “Let’s do this…” 😉

  • Night Witch, the Advocate, the Shrike & the Mat

Posted on February 2, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

January gave us a number of shiny things. Some, like the Blightbringer, were boxes full of parts that were equal parts ominous and amazing, while others were very simple , with only a few components. Given that we’re in the last stretch to CaptainCon and I like to have things to give away to random people that amuse me, today’s post is a conglomerate of unpackagings for your viewing pleasure. These models will be making the trip with me to Rhode Island, and some lucky CaptainCon attendees will find the blisters mysteriously coming into their possession, as I hand them over. Mysteriously. For reason unknown. I AM AN ENIGMA!

  • Paint The Target

Posted on February 1, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke 1 Comment

Hey, it’s February! Whose idea was that? The chilly days of January are behind us, the chilly days of February are laden with the promise of frozen toes and sniffly noses. Or maybe that’s just in Canada. You folks in more temperate climates, I envy you slightly…

Our January challenge was to paint something new. Christmas presents, Boxing Day shopping loot, stuff that’s sitting right on top of the pile of unpainted stuff we all have laying around. I will say, this is possibly the most diverse Target we’ve had to date, with the exception that it seems the Brewers are a popular Guild Ball team with the Losties…

    Onward!

From VoltRon, Izamu the Armour and two Komainu, from Malifaux. You could be forgiven for thinking Izamu was a Skorne model, but the Komainu are robot dogs with gunmouths. That’s a thing.

  • Dicewraith’s thoughts on Zapdos

Posted on December 28, 2015 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

dicewraith60Never before has a Warmachine or Hordes model so aptly earned the name of a Pokemon. Of course, Zapdos is no pocket monster, but instead Zapdos is the nickname for the new hotness of the Circle Orboros, the Storm Raptor. It’s a giant, feathered storm incarnate. The Circle’s new Gargantuan brings more to the table than just a party trick where your grandfather’s gimpy knee starts playing up and he begins muttering about incoming bad weather.

stormraptorA host of abilities accompany the Storm Raptor. Gunfighter, Immunity to Electricity, Flight, Plasma Nimbus, Superconduction (its super effective!), and my personal favorite rule Virtuoso, plus lightning based attacks like, well, Lightning, and even more cool toys such as Disruption and Electro Leap.  Oh, and it does have a neat animus in Sky Fire. Let’s ponder.

Lots of rules and then there is the stat line of this beast. Not to be confused with the Mark of the Beast. That’s a different thing.

    Spd 7, STR 13, Mat 5, Rat 6, Def 12 and ARM 18.

You’ll note that this is not a front line gargantuan with a stat line like that. Bird bones, no matter how enormous, are still hollow, and will crack under applied pressure. Still…

Plasma nimbus will do a POW 10 electrical damage after being hit by a melee attack. This won’t dent many Heavies and will only inconvenience Light Warnouns, but most single wound troops will find swinging at Zapdos a suicide mission.

Superconduction is where it is at, letting the Storm Raptor support other friendly electicity afficionados, granting +2 to attack rolls originating within 5 inches of Zapdos if the attack is electrical and ranged.  This can stack nicely with the Sky Fire animus, which grants +2 damage from electrical attacks against within his command range of 9″. Note that this bumps its Lightning attack up to POW16 with POW12 Elecro Leaps.

Now, who and or what can use these awesome abilities to their fullest?

Lets get the obvious out of the way. Krueger, especially Kruegar2. The Storm Lord has a ROF 3 electrical ranged weapon that has sustained attack.  Suddenly Rat 8, POW 14 will do even more work and can potentially surprise your opponent if he hasn’t done the math.

Add in the Tharn Ravager Shaman, which gets a POW 15 assault out of the deal. Note that the Tharn do work nicely with Krueger’s theme force…

Then there is another new release from Devastation, the Mist Riders.  They have a magical lightning attack, which doesn’t get the +2 to attack (magic instead of ranged), but they are magic ability 7 which is respectable, and the Sky Fire anumus will make them effectively POW 14.

It may not be his forte, but Zapdos is no slouch in melee. He has Gunfighter and Virtuoso, meaning he has 4 basic attacks before he has to start spending Fury to buy additional attacks.  The hardest hitting is POW 18 on his beak, so you need to be a little bit surgical where you apply his beak and talons to be the most effective, but note that this is before you start applying the buffs and synergy that Circle armies are known for.

Weird final thought, running Zapdos under Una the Falconer and fielding Zapdos for 1pt cheaper… My experience with Una is a little low and I am not so sure placing a gargantuan on a solo is the best use of the giant electrical bird, but I’m willing to be proven wrong.

    Peace.
