  • Feeling Sappy: The Farrow Sapper and the Gunnery Sergeant

Posted on January 29, 2021 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

I’ve shared with you all before my thoughts on the Trollkin Kriels and their organized military, with Brigadier General Gunnbjorn (and no doubt General Brug) bringing their expertise to the war effort and helping the Trollbloods embrace gunpowder and high explosives, so I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise that I’m delighted to see the Trollkin Gunnery Sergeant releasing. You may be more surprised to know that the same through processes apply to the farrow of the Thornfall Alliance. Gun Boars, Razorback Crews – these things make me happy, so let’s double up on the fun times today by unpacking both the Trollkin Gunnery Sergeant and the Farrow Sapper and his mines.

Hordes Minions Trollbloods 📎and tagged Farrow Trollbloods Trollkin
  • Gunnbjorn2 and the Barrage Team

Posted on December 18, 2020 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

The Trollkin are one of the sturdiest, toughest people in the Iron Kingdoms. They’re renowned for being after to take a punch square on their craggy chins and responding with a very mean punch of their own. Their attrition game is one of the best, and conversely, their ability to set up a viable gunline is recognized as one of their week points. This, naturally, is why my my Trollbloods back Hordes MkII were most often led by Grim Angus, and packed  a full unit of Pyg Bushwhackers. The release of Captain Gunnbjorn made me ridiculously happy, because it opened up the door for the third subsect of Trollbloods to get some love. The first was the traditionalists, centered on the Krielstone, Fennblades and Champions. The second was the Northkin, with their polar bears and all that beer. The third – the “modern” army – with their firearms and military training – finally had a poster boy.

Brigadier General Gunnbjorn has put aside his trademark bazooka, and I won’t lie – that makes me very sad. However, there’s a lot to be said for a boostable armor-piercing POW12 rifle, and while Gunnbjorn may no longer be risking permanent damage to his own hearing, the Trollkin Barrage Team has stepped in to fill the gap.

  • WMH: Gunnbjorn2 is now in playtest

Posted on September 18, 2020 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

The Trollbloods CID is now live, and while there’s no changes to Sluggers in the Week 1 iteration, the Barrage Team and Gunnery Sergeant are up for testing, and most excitingly, Brigadier General Gunnbjorn – Gunnbjorn2 – is on the table. There’s a whole lot of tweaking taking place, from Runeshapers getting Battle Wizardand an increase to the Champions’ armour, but I started this damn game with the Searforge Commission, and sometimes one just has to channel their inner Durgen Madhammer and make things blow up on the other side of the table. When it comes to the Trollbloods, Gunnbjorn is the man for the jobs.

Disclaimer: Everything in today’s post refers to a live paytesting document, in its first CID iteration. Everything could change next week, and nothing is final.

Let’s take a look at the Trollkin King of Kaboom.

  • Trollblood CID on the horizon…

Posted on September 9, 2020 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

While I am now and ever will be a devout Menite, praise the Lawgiver, I’ve been known to dabble in other factions, and we’re on the cusp of seeing just what Privateer Press has in store for one of my favorite Hordes factions, the Trollbloods. Possessed of some of the most fun models in the entirety of the Warmachine/Hordes stable, the trollkin have long help a special place in my heart, ever since I put Grim Angus at the tail end of Mk1 and was determined to prove that you could play a functional Trollblood gunline.

Every watch Mk1 Dartan Vilmon try to achieve anything while surrounded by Pyg Bushwhackers who, moments before, had CRA’d into the opposing deployment zone? It’s a good time.

Like most factions, the Trollbloods have three sub-factions, and try to my whimsical nature one has always been my preference. The classic, tribal Kriels are cool and all, as are the Northkin, but the idea of the professional military trollkin led by Gunnbjorn has always made me smile. Now, with Gunnbjorn2 en route, supported by models like Riot Quest’s Generals Ledfoot and “Thunderstone” Brug, will we finally see the Trollkin Sluggers being a strong choice?

    Yesterday’s announcement:

    CID announcement news!

Hey all. The Trollbloods CID is just around the corner, and there’s some news and announcements I wanted to share with all of you.

1.) The existing CID forums had a major technical … well meltdown. Our IT dept worked on various fixes, and ultimately, they had to completely erase the old forums. All the old posts, and user accounts, are gone. Though the cid.privateerpress.com URL will remain the same.

2.) This means that I am rebuilding the forums from scratch, which is taking a bit of time. My goal is that the CID will begin next Wednesday, on 9.16 and run through the end of month (perhaps a bit longer or shorter, depending on feedback). However, rebuilding the forums can end up having some unforeseen consequences so, there is a chance that start date slips. I’ll let you know.

3.) This also means that all of your user accounts on the CID forums are gone. Anyone wanting to participate in CID will need to register a new account. Which we will begin approving closer to the start date of CID.

4.) Like the Legion CID, this is going to be a no-battle-reports-accepted CID. The pandemic hasn’t gone anywhere, and just like before don’t want to encourage gatherings in those areas where they are not safe. The Legion CID went incredibly well, even without battle reports, so we have the proof that this can work in a constructive and positive manner.

5.) This CID is a Trollblood CID, not a Farrow CID. While there is a new Farrow model introduced, and Farrow are usable in the new theme force, we did not want to split our internal playtest resources between the two Factions and this CID. It would not do proper justice to both factions to do so. Expect 99% Trollbloods in this CID, and know that Farrow changes are on our radar, we aren’t ignoring them. I couldn’t give you an ETA on when anything Farrow  related might occur, there are previous updates that have been delayed due to 2020 that are still in the queue.

Anyway, there’s your news blast for today. I’ll be back in touch once we are closer to knowing if 9.16 is definitely going to be the CID start date. Things are looking really good that it should be, so I’m hopeful.

Until then, be safe, and always boost if you need a 7+

While I long for the days when we’d be able to buy a new faction book and get the thrill of being surprised by new model entries rather than knowing what’s coming in advance, I’m hopeful for what the CID brings us. More than anything else I’m hopeful for warbeasts that support the professional military aesthetic conceptually. Right now we have Dozer & Smigg and the Blitzer. None of the light warbeasts, as fun as they are, really fit the concept. This may be a reflection of the more tribal roots of the faction, but if the Skorne can outfit a Cyclops with a flayer cannon, I’m pretty sure Gunnbjorn can work out how to upgrade an Impaler’s arsenal, maybe by borrowing a cannon from the Ogrun Assault Corps.

What are you looking forward to most in the CID?

    Trollbloods
  • RQ: Flugwug, Treasure Chests, and Ledfoot

Posted on January 27, 2020 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Never ones to settle on their laurels, Privateer Press is always looking for ways to enhance or change up your gaming experiences. Last thing we want is for you to get bored! Riot Quest’s Spawn Gate expansion (unboxed last week) came with a new Bounty deck, but what if we were to change up the Treasure Chests, one of the core facets of Riot Quest? Today we’re cracking open Flugwug’s personal treasure trove, and while we’re at it well open up Ledfoot’s little tank.

    Riot Quest Trollbloods
  • This is my boomstick

Posted on October 16, 2019 7:00 am by gdaybloke 2 Comments

When I recently won a Magic Bullet at the office, it had me wondering about the practical applications of a small food processor when it comes to fighting werewolves and the like. Being even nerdier than most, this naturally led my ponderances to the gunslingers – more specifically, the gun mages – of the Iron Kingdoms. From Cygnar’s Arcane Tempest Gun Mages to the Llaelese Thorn Gun Mages, from Jarl Skuld to the Satyxis Gunslingers, the idea of slapping some runes on a bullet and sending it on its merry way through a magelock pistol (or equivalent) is not uncommon in the Iron Kingdoms. While few have pushed the concept from small arms to rifles, some have opted for magic shooty death at long range, including the traitorous Kara Sloan, who has secretly flirted with the Infernal Courts.

    And then there’s this guy.

Gunnbjorn continues to be my favourite Trollkin warlock conceptually, despite his launch into MkII Hordes having him seen as lackluster. He’s one of the only warlocks in the game without a magic weapon, but that shoulder mounted boomstick still packs a heck of a punch. Gunnbjorn represents a subsection of the Trollbloods that is often overlooked in favor of the more tribal side of the faction: The professional military.

As with most factions, there are  subfactions within that you can build a whole army around. For example, Cygnar has the Trenchers, the Stormnouns, and their gunmages. Khador has the Man-O-War, the Winterguard, and the Iron Fangs. Skorne have the Paingivers, the Cataphracts and the Praetorians. Caveat, there are always a few models that don’t slot into a particular subtheme, but the concept stands.

    Dozer & Smigg

For Trollbloods there are the “traditional” models, that follow the more – for lack of a better term – primitive ways. These include the general kith and kin like the Kriel Warriors and the Long Riders. Then there’s the Northkin. Still tribal, but with a white-furred wintery bent, such as the Fire Eaters and the  Northkin Raiders. The third category – those that I would classify as an organized, trained military – brings something to special to the Trollbloods – the Gunline. At least on paper.

So here’s my challenge to you, my dear Losties. I want you to turn your heads to the more “professional army” side of the faction. Think away from the wild, unfocussed fury of Mulg and the like, more toward models that would drill and practice and embrace the “modern” technology of the Iron Kingdoms. Think Dozer & Smig and Blitzers. Think the Pummeler and Thumper. Think – and I mean this most sincerely – Trollkin Sluggers.

Give me a reason, internet. Just give me a reason.

  • Sekrit Projekt revealed!

Posted on July 31, 2019 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Today is the Wednesday of my annual GenCon road trip, which means that the Sekrit Projekt I’ve been referring to occasionally on social media has been delivered. Sekrit Projekt came about when I wanted to do something special for Ninja Steve, who has for years now welcomed me into his home every August so that I could attend what equates to one of the Holy Grails of gamer convention experiences.

Ladies and Gentlelost, I present the Hooch Hauler.

    Painting Trollbloods
  • Turner and Hooch (Hauler)

Posted on March 5, 2018 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Sometimes an old cop buddy movie with a dog is just what you need. Other times, it’s an enormous barrel on wheels, full of booze that’ll rot a human stomach out in a matter of minutes, being pulled by polar bears. Oh, and what the heck, let’s weaponize the damn thing too. Lostie TheGreatGaspy has been indulging his inner Northkin lately, and when the Hooch Hauler was announced, well, let’s just say he had to start wearing a bib to catch all of the drool. We just told everyone he lived at Red Lobster now, so he wouldn’t be shunned.

So many Hoochy bits! If you convert the driver to being female, is she a Hoochy momma? That enormous resin barrel needs to be hollowed out and fitted with a tiny working spigot. Just sayin’. Drink responsibly, obey your state’s drinking laws. Don’t drink and commandeer polar-bear-pulled wagons.

  • Pyg Lookouts

Hot on the heels of Monday’s light warbeasts, the Pyg Lookouts have also joined the Northkin tribes. Judge them not by their size, for each carries a firearm, advance deploys, has pathfinder, can prowl, can ambush, oh and let’s add Mark The Target to make things even easier for the rest of your horde to totally beat the snot out of things.  Thankfully, they also have immunity to Cold – I mean, just look at that poor fellow in the middle at the back there. He’d totally freeze his everything off hiding in a snowman!

  • We Three Trolls: Ice, Winter and Basher

Posted on January 29, 2018 7:00 am by gdaybloke 1 Comment

The Trollbloods will always hold a special place in my geek heart. They were my first Hordes faction, and they continue to have some of the most fun and characterful models in all of Warmachine and Hordes. Today we take a look at the three new Light Warbeasts released this month – the Ice Troll, the Winter Troll, and the Troll Basher, because calling it the Basher Troll would have kept with the naming convention, and dammit, you’re not the boss of me, I don’t  have to clean my room if I don’t want to.

Each of the three shares a common body, draped in furs and cast in resin. Given that each of the three has actual hair, while their more Southern counterparts have quills and rocky growths, I’m wondering about the cultural variance between the Northkin tribes and those of, say, the Gnarls, such that the full-blood trolls from the warmer climes feel that they need to shave.
