  • GenCon Photodump 4: Ninja Division

Posted on August 22, 2018 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Okay, so Monday’s post was kinda half unboxing, half GenCon debriefing, but today it’s the official Photodump #4. Lost Hemisphere has a history of hassling the Ninja Division booth, and that’s in large part due to my fondness for their chibi models (Super Dungeon Explore, Ninja All Stars, Rail Raiders Infiniite). Sure, they produce other games too, but the chibis have my heart… Nevertheless I *did* try to talk about other things with Ninja Division’s John Cadice, such as the newly released Doomseeker, which we unboxed right before we headed off to GenCon.

And now you can see other Ninja Division things!

Museum Rush was also unleashed at GenCon…

Did everyone survive? Is everyone still alive? It’s the day after Halloween! Last night was full of ghouls and goblins and for some reason my son running around with one of those rubber horse heads! Oh, the shenaniganry that occurs in the quest for candy… I’m a grown-up, dammit, there’s at always candy somewhere around my house. I don’t need no spooky holiday to get *my* sugar rush on! October’s Target was models that were spooky or in costume. Let’s see what people came up with!

SimonS gets our bones shaking with his Super Dungeon Explore chibi Shamble Priest!

  • One last GenCon Postmortem: Ninja Division

Posted on October 17, 2017 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Okay, so I’m running late with this one, but I’ll just have to trust you to forgive me. While I was at GenCon I was able to sit down for a chat with Ninja Division Honcho John Cadice, about Rail Raiders Infinite, Relic Knights, Starfinder and more. You can listen at your covenience, but beware: This *was* recorded at GenCon, so the background hubbub is ridiculous, and our voices were fading. Also, I was apparently talking really fast. I’m not sure if that was because at the time of recording I was running on caffeine and adrenaline, or if I was just happy to be sitting down for a brief spell.

Conveniently, NInja Division make their booth easy to find.

  • What does the Fox say?

Posted on October 16, 2017 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Ring-a-ding-ding, that’s what! Behold yon Kitsune Clan Oni from NInja All-Stars! Am I abandoning my mountain monkeys for the forest foxes? Has my Yamazaru Chunin been brough low by Kitsune Kunoichi? No! This fantastic fox is my latest contribution for the Chibi Paint Swap group on Facebook. Exchange #10 is called “Spoopy Tails”, asking for spooky and animal models! Luck of the draw meant I got to paint a model for [REDACTED] , and I’ve always been fond of the Kitsune Clan Oni.

And of course, once you add a gorgeous Dragon Forge Design base, it’s Fox Ninja Magic

  • Ninja All Stars: Son Goku

Posted on March 28, 2017 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

It’s Chibi Wednesday on a Tuesday! How can this come to be? Why it must be the Monkey King, trickster god that he is! Oh, that wacky Monkey King… I grew up with the television series Monkey! in my feckless youth (I was completely lacking in feck). The final episode aired in 1980… and now I feel really old. Regardless, I learned much from the televised tale of the Monkey King. I learned that in the worlds before Monkey, primal chaos reigned. Heaven sought order, but the Phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown. The four worlds formed again, and yet again, as endless eons wheeled and passed. Time, and the pure essences of Heaven, the moisture of the Earth, the powers of the Sun and the Moon all worked upon a certain rock, old as creation, and it became magically fertile. That first egg was named “Thought”. Here, see for yourself.

Long story short, it makes total sense that the second named chunin for Ninja All Stars’ Yamazaru clan is Son Goku, their homage to the Monkey King himself.

When we’re talking about the Yamazaru, start with remembering that it’s a slow clan. In fact, the slowest. The Yamazaru chunin is the slowest in the game, with 4 movement. The Yamazaru are the children of the mountain, and move about as swiftly. Now, look at Son Goku, with his 7 movement.

Look at you chunin. Now at Son Goku. Back to your chunin. Now, back to S… dammit, where’d he go? The only models in the clans that can outrun Son Goku are the Tanchyo’s Kunuichi and their character chunin Kakuro. That alone should get your attention.

He’s not as immediately tough or resilient as the regular chunin – 3 Attack and 3 Defense – but he’s actually cheaper, at 19 koban to add to your team rather than the chunin’s 20, and be brings some tricks to the table beside his ridiculous (for a Yamazaru) speed.

    • Earth Mastery means he gets to reroll any dice that don’t come up with the Earth result once per round, greatly increasing your chances of stunning defenders in melee, and reducing the chance of being stuck with an attacker-injured result.
    • Leap helps him take further advantage of that high movement, letting him scale to elevated terrain for the cost of a single movement point, rather than the usual two
    • Resilient – heh – If Son Goku get injured or stunned, roll a die. If you roll Earth – and remember, you get to reroll dice that don’t result in Earth once per round thanks to Earth Mastery – then injuries are downgraded to stuns, and stuns are downgraded to nothing more than an insignificant scratch.
    • As character hero, Son Goku also gains his own ability – Lucky – which grants him a Luck token at the beginning of each of his activations. Each luck token is a reroll, and I’ll note that there’s no limit on how many he can tote around. Don’t need them for a turn or two? Just keep stockpiling until you do!

Son Goku may not have the Defense 4 that Mizaru and the chunin have, but with Resilient and a steady supply of rerolls he’s going to be tougher to take down than he first appears. He may not hit as hard as the chunin, but with the capacity to move at almost twice the speed and completely unhindered by pesky stuff like walls, Son Goku could add a new element to your Yamazaru game as he flies across the board with your kunoichi in tow, while your kaiken and the others struggle to keep up. Son Goku comes with the Yamazaru clan box, so if you’ve picked up the monkeys you’re ready to roll.

The sad part for me is that, as happy as I am with the paintjob on this little fellow, I don’t get to keep him. He’s being shoved in an envelope and being mailed off as part of the latest Chibi Paint Swap. I guess this just means I’ll have to order another Yamazaru clan box to replace him 😉

  • Chibi Wednesday: Dicewraith’s Kappa

Posted on December 14, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

dicewraith60Good morning, all. Continuing my exploration into the world of chibi miniatures, I have decided that I’m going to focus on Ninja All Stars for a little while, because garsh darn it, I want to win the Ninja All Stars trophy. It’s so gloriously enormous and shiny and… What is that?  You guys havent seen it?  Well feast your eyes on this baby to the right here.

There are actually three of them to be won in the up and coming league at my LGS, and one of them shall be mine… oh, yes, it shall.  Now I know I talked about the league starting soon, but by soon I mean Janurary. That’s mere weeks away! The LGS wants to wait until after the holidays for us to play, and I am alright with this. Not because it gives me more time to paint, nooo…

Speaking of the LGS, maybe I should get to point, albeit in a round about way. The LGS managed to get some Ninja All Stars Ronin models since I last wrote to you all, and I am in love with their adorable deadliness. When I talked to Gdaybloke (my evil overlord, long may he reign) I was searching through the Ronin models available in Ninja All stars and I ran into Kappa (I told you I would get there eventually!) and I squeed, for lo and behold, Soda Pop Miniatures have included terrapin (albeit an evil spirit hybrid of sorts) in their game about little chibi assassins, and my mind just boggled – it was a Mutant Ninja Turtle, possibly an adolescent!

Gdaybloke being wise told me he was a kappa. I tried not to let my disappointment get the better of me, and I researched… Deep in Japanese mythology is the river child (or at least the translation of the name Kappa). Per the lore, Kappa tales have been used to warn children of the dangers lurking in rivers and lakes, as kappa have been often said to try to lure people into water and pull them in.

Honestly I love the model and picked him up, painted him up and am after the fact learning that he is a sneaky git.

A Movement of 4 isn’t all that special, but I mean heck, he is a turtle. 2 attack is deceiving, because he is capable of so much more. We’ll get to that in a second. 4 defense is solid.

He is full of surprising abilities, most notably his signature ability, From the Deep. If he is stealthed and attacks he gets +2 attack, and with the Sneaky ability he even starts the game in the shadows. Stack it up with his sneaky git like ability Backstab and he has 6 attack dice. 6. Six. The number after 5.  Let that sink in. He is even Resilient so he will stick around a long time.

Entangle pushes his influence zone out one square further, and if you’re into taking advantage of shrines, he affinity with Earth, Void _and_ Water. So there.

I plan to use kappa quite a bit honestly, I find him very very useful, especially since my clan – the Tanchyo – seems rather low on defense dice.  I need a good bricky model or two to absorb damage and keep enemy chunin away from my squishy archers.

The Kappa is available from Soda Pop’s online store here. Kick some shell.

    Ninja All Stars
  • Chibi Wednesday: Howl & Yip (Ninja All Stars)

Posted on December 7, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

howlyip_02Imagine you were a solitary ronin. You liked it that way. Accountable to no-one, just doing your ronin thing. Kind of a lone wolf, if you will. Now, imagine you suddenly became responsible for another life. Not just any life, but that of an infant child, a babe in the woods, a mewling cub. Good thing you’re a master swordsman…

Howl & Yip! It’s two ronin in one, though one’s a teeny babe strapped to the back of a kickass duelist with no time for your shenanigans. With both Earth and Fire affinities, Howl is set to take advantage of shrines and trigger his abilities. An Attack of 3 is solid, a defense of 4 is even moreso, but let’s stack on his fancy sword tricks…

Master Swordsman – Opponents neverget assists or back strike bonuses against Howl & Yip. Is it Yip warning Howl of threats from behind? Is it Howl’s own ability to counter a seemingly endless number of opponents simultaneously? Maybe that impressive cranium conceals a complicated sonar system…

Close Combat Master– Rerolling one of your dice whenever you make a combat roll seems like a handy ability to me.

Precision Strike – You know how to really ruin your friend’s day? Choose a Fire result in melee and stun not only yourself and your opponent, but also any friendlies also in your influence zone. Precision Strike means only opposing models get stunned, effectively duplicating the Earth result. Heck yes.

Resilient – Okay, so he’s already rocking 4 Defense, but now whenever he’d be injured, on a successful affinity test – and I’ll remind you, he has two affinities, so it’s a 1:3 chance instead of 1:6 – an Injury is reduced to a Stun, and a Stun is negated entirely.

Tough – Oh, and at the beginning of his activation, if Howl passes an affinity test he gets a Protect token, which he can pitch for the same effects as Resilient.

    howlyip_01

So not only is he an incredible swordsman, you can’t sneak up on him, you can’t gang up on him, there’s a good chance he’ll have generated a Protect token before you can get to him and even if you manage to get through that high Defense stat and force him to ditch the token, he’s just plain naturally resilient. I personally play Yamazaru – the Monkey clan – and we’re known for being above the curve when it comes to taking a punch, yet Howl & Yip are even harder to get off the board than one of my damn Oni! If you’re looking for a kickass stabby guy who can go the distance while still showing a caring and responsible paternal side, you don’t need to look any further.

This one was fun to paint, but he won’t be staying at the Gdaycave. He’ll be finding his new home as part of the most recent Chibi Swap! You can play along, if chibis are your thing, by joining the group and putting your hand up when the next round of signups commences! https://www.facebook.com/groups/chibipaintswap/

    Ninja All Stars
  • Ninja All Stars: Shojo

Posted on November 16, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

shojo_01It’s Chibi Wednesday, and it’s time to go shopping. Today we’re taking a look at the shopkeeper from the Ninja All Stars kickstarter, Shojo! Though she was born to Clan Ika, Shojo is more than happy to eschew clan loyalties if you have the coin. She’s also just generally happy to help provide you with what you need!

Shojo’s quite mobile on that barrel with a speed of 6, though her attack and defense are both 2, so our happy little merchant is quite light on the stats. With the Water and Earth affinities, she’ll join your team for 16 Koban, and stick around for 6 each game. With her low stats, though, why do you want her on your team? Let’s see what she has in stock.

Yopparai: Each round, Shojo can choose to buff either her offense or defense by +2, making her very versatile. Personally I think it’s largely based on just what’s in that bottle she’s carrying…

Shrewd Negotiator: If she’s in the healing house at the end of a game, her team gets 2 additional koban. Moneys! However, she needs to be in the healing house… if you can swing it, get your timing right and afford to have her off the board healing rather than in the fray at the close of the game, she essentially pays 1/3 of her own maintenance fee.

Close Combat Master: Reroll one of your dice when making a combat roll. This can be the difference between dropping an opponent, or putting herself into the healing house at the wrong time.

Nimble: Reroll any or all of your dice when she attempts a dodge. All that time vaulting over barrels has paid off.

Redirection: When someone tries to hit her with a ranged attack, on a successful affinity test she redirects the attack onto another model – friendly or enemy – within range of the attack. I can picture it now. “That guy said something about yer mom!”. Note that with a dual affinity there’s a 1 in 3 chance that every ranged attack you make at her will potentially be redirected into one of your own models…

Resilient: Any time you hit her she does an affinity test – so a 1 in 3 chance this will trigger – and that Injury becomes a Stun, or that Stun just goes away in its entirety. Tis but a scratch! Are you interested in some guava juice? I have a sale on cut-price linens…

Ronin: Well, yeah, she’s a ronin, you have to meet her fee or she’ll take her business elsewhere.

As one of the more affordable ronin (Cheap at half the price, Shogun! Come in, see what else we have on sale!), Shojos isn’t going to be a game changer but she brings some fun versatility in what is a deceptively tricky to eliminate model, with Redirection and Resilient giving her a good shot at sticking around even if you option for the +2 boost to her attack rather than her defense. That +2 Attack will put her above the curve against most opponents, while adding it to her Defense will make most opposing Kunoichi and Yajiri very sad indeed. The potential for extra cash for the team every game is a nice little bonus – keeping her on the team for 4 Koban per game rather than 6 is a neat little extra.

Shojo isn’t yet available in the Soda Pop’s Online Store, but give her time… she’s probably just stocking up on extra Saki. Keep your ears to the ground, she’ll be comin’ ’round the mountain once the Yamazaru let her through.

If by some chance you weren’t paying attention, Lost Hemisphere’s annual fundraiser in conjunction with the New England Privateers is returning to CaptainCon in February. We announced it here, and if you haven’t read about it you should, so that you can remember to bring moneys to buy draw tickets to support the Jimmy Fund and to win goodies from the prize pool. Speaking of which, our pals at Ninja Division have sent a care package for the prize pool, so those of you at CaptainCon will have opportunities to get your Ninja on!

Behold yon pile of chibi niftiness!

  • GenCon 2016 Photodump #3

Posted on August 17, 2016 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Alright, at this point you’ve endured three photodumps so far – Pennsic, GenCon (assorted stuff) and GenCon (Cosplayers and peeps). Now let’s look at some games and some of the displays, including shots taken from the painting competitions – well, the models that were in the cabinets when I walked by. I will make a note here, I was exceedingly disappointed by Wyrd Miniatures and their miniature display. Their booth was large and spacious and well appointed and well stocked and… the miniature displays they had on the walls of their booth were unlit, and with a black background pretty much ensured that anyone trying to take pics of the models on display ended up with a photo of their own reflection and not much beyond that. Bah. Finding an entire hall of VS System players cheered me up though, including giant standee of Jennifer Walters.

She-Hulk Smash! Breaking the fourth wall before Deadpool even existed, fighting evil with her brain as well as her brawn, the sassy lawyer has long been one of my favourite comic book characters.
