  • The Invisible Army: Opening Salvo

Posted on January 9, 2014 4:45 pm by gdaybloke 2 Comments

IKRPGGday80Those of you who’ve listened to the most recent Lost Hemisphere Radio will have enjoyed my breaking Tim Banky’s mind a little by trying to validate Kossite Woodsmen in the context of the theme force for Zevanna Agha, the Old Witch of Khador. I thought I’d take a little moment and share my thoughts here on the blog as well, and perhaps explain why.

One of my locals – Hi, Tom! – said the other week, when I was discussing the army in-store, that Chris has got to Chris. It stuck with me. This basically means that I gotta be me, it means that if something is rampantly unpopular on the forums, it gets my attention, and I start pondering. I guess you could say there’s a degree of blind faith in Privateer, but in the end every release that is sent to us has been through waves of both internal and external playtesting, in an effort to provide us with something that’s cool, yet balanced. Some things are tested more than others, I’m sure, and there are definitely models that I look at and quite simply have no idea where to go with them, but by and large there’s a certain rhyme to PP’s reason.

    zevanna

If a model costs X pts, if its abilities and stats are just so, there’s some combo or something out there that led to PP deciding that this was to be the final iteration of that model.

This has in large part driven the optimism I have about most new releases. I’m not so arrogant as to think that I have a Masters degree in model design – there are other blogs and podcasts with contributors who are FAR superior to me when it comes to tactical and strategic analysis – but darn it, I’m stubborn, and I refuse to completely write off anything. There has to be some way to make that unloved model work, some scenario where it’s the perfect solution to the problem at hand. The challenge, of course, is in finding it.

This drove my dogged persistence in mastering Amon Ad Raza’s Wanderers of the Faith, with its reliance on Allegiants and Idrian Skirmishers and its complete lack of Choir, and the High Reclaimer’s The Flames of Reclamation, which requires multiple units of Cleansers, a posse of Reclaimers, and again, no Choir at all. The end result was surprising success in some events in which I was essentially able to rogue the meta. Because both theme forces were “crap”, no-one had bothered to actually include them in their tourney prep, and I was able to capitalize, which basically just reinforced my reasoning for why I’d bothered to play them in the first place.

So now we come to 2014. Templecon marks the end of the Lost Hemisphere Gaming Year, and the beginning of the new. While I have any number of potential projects to work on, one thing I did want to do was paint up another Warmachine battlebox for demo purposes, and since I’d nabbed a Khadoran battlebox months ago, I started pondering alternate Khadoran schemes.

    • Then it occurred, what if I want to do an extended demo? Better push the box to 25 pts.
    • Then it occurred, what if I want to try dabbling with an alternate caster? Better grab one or two… and since I inevitably choose models based aesthetics and how interested I am in painting them, I grabbed Strakhov and Old Witch.
    • Then it occurred, since I’m looking at working on these anyway, is there’s a theme force I can push here for 2014’s project?

Breaking through the clouds that surrounded my imagination, shining their beacons that mark them as some of the most maligned models in the entirety of Warmachine and Hordes, they came. Lanky moustaches, a mix of bows, crossbows and rifles that somehow have the same weapon profile, and there’s even one in a dress…

    KossiteWoodsmanGrunts

    Kossite Woodsmen.

Oh yes, thought I, this should be a thing…

  • The new LH Swag Store

Posted on January 8, 2014 10:11 pm by gdaybloke Comment

IKRPGGday80lhshirtsBehold, for the enjoyment and edification of all, Lost Hemisphere now has a new swag store. The old one’s still up and running for those who feel like getting in touch with Lost Hemisphere: The Original Blog, but in the age of Lost Hemisphere: The Next Bloggeration, we look to a more… sophisticated means of swaggery. Hence, you can now get LH stuff from MyLocker.

Here be the linky to the new swag store.

Pros  of the new Swag Store:

    • Much cooler range of shirt types
    • The purchaser can design their own swag, so you can put together something that suits your personal style, and then slap an LH Astrolabe on it.
    • There’s a softball jersey option. Because why shouldn’t there be?

Cons of the new Swag Store:

    • Shipping outside of the United States is prohibitively expensive at this time. If you live outside of the US, I strongly recommend using a pal in the US as a shipping waystation (ie, get stuff shipped to them, have them ship to you)
    • For some reason, it thinks we run a bakery, and it default to that on most shirts. Thankfully, it’s really easy to put whatever word you want in there. If you have dreams of a Lost Hemisphere Haberdashery, you can make a shirt that promotes it. Use the drop-downs, or manually edit the field on the right of the screen. I’m trusting you to behave with the freedom on offer here.

Yes, I drafted up the last shirt in the pic because it amused me. I’d totally buy assorted pastries from Lost Hemisphere Bakery. The profiteroles would be amazing. Just sayin’.

So there you have it. If you’re so inclined, if you’d like to help support Lost Hemisphere and Lost Hemisphere Radio or you just think the Astrolabe’s as cool as I do, you can now set yourself up with swag accordingly. Enjoy responsibly.

  • Raluk Moorclaw

Posted on January 8, 2014 9:10 pm by gdaybloke Comment

IKRPGGday80Every once in a while there comes a model that makes you go “Hrm?”. One such model for me was the Gobber Tinker. Yes, his repair ability means that Hordes players can finally repair their Battle Engines, but it still felt like there was a piece of the puzzle missing. That all changed when we started hearing rumors concerning Mr Raluk Moorclaw, the Ironmonger.

He’s totally out to mong all your iron. All your iron, is monged by him. In other words, Trollblood, Blindwater and Thornfall armies can now field Mercenary warjacks, marshalled by Raluk. Aw yeah.

One of the joys of being part of the Lost Hemisphere crew has been having a reason to slap a logo on a shirt and to stroll around the joint with the Lost Hemisphere Astrolabe, as designed by the ever nifty Dave Daniels, plastered across my chest. I think I currently have five Lost Hemisphere shirts, a small collection accrued over several years of geekery. In the past Lost Hemisphere’s crew shirts have been provided via our cafepress store, but in my quest to find a suitable football jersey for the Stag & Doe of Lost Pal Mr Lunchbox and his lovely fiancee (who will forevermore be referred to as Laura Lunchbox), I came across a site that provided a wider range of shirts and the like, with a better spread of colours, and all that jazz. Sure, the LH shirts are generally navy/white, but it’s nice to have options. Assuming shipping plans come together (cross-border shipping always complicates matters) I do believe I’ll be sporting one of these at Templecon this year…

Assuming all goes well, I’ll be updating the Swag Store link to point to the new vendor shortly.

IKRPGGday80Ah, it feels good to be writing reviews in the ol’ blog software interface again… We relaunch the blog reviews here on Lost Hemisphere with something near and dear to my heart, the Retribution of Scyrah. Not only are we stepping back in with a brand new solo that will to a large extent cause some significant re-evaluation of how Retribution of Scyrah players use their Houseguard units, but we also take a peek at the re-release of the Houseguard Riflemen, this time in plastic – and you know, I’m grateful, since Ossyan’s demanding I pack multiple units, and I hate carrying a heavy army bag…

  • Well, here we are again.

Posted on January 4, 2014 9:48 pm by gdaybloke 5 Comments

IKRPGGday80This isn’t what it looks like. Well, not exactly.

Several years ago, I started a blog in which I rambled about VS System, and recruited like minds to do the same. It evolved into a Warmachine/Hordes blog, and became something of which I was (and still am) very proud. Aided by some truly exceptional people, Lost Hemisphere stamped its boot on the blogosphere and said NO MORE!!! to high end competitive strategic analysis. It’s a game, dammit, we cried, and we’re playing it for fun and entertainment.

Time passed, a podcast followed, and I like to think good times were had by all… almost.

As the years continued and Lost Hemisphere grew, it asked more and more of my time, and with a growing family that was something that I had less and less of. Changes on the homefront meant that I needed to be free to dedicate myself more to my growing children and less to an internet presence. With a heavy heart, Lost Hemisphere, as it was, published its final post.

That was about a year ago.

Times haven’t changed that much on my end, but I’ve found time and again that I miss blogging. I miss feeling the stream of consciousness as rambling thoughts congeal into words that, with any luck, make sense to someone out there. More than anything, Lost Hemisphere was an outlet for the side of me that likes to think it can do word stuff. We’ve continued to post previews and reviews on the LH forums, but I think all and sundry can agree that the blog was more fun to read…

… and so here we are.

The plan at this stage is not to return 100% to the ways of old, but to use the LH blog as a more organic outlet for expressive writing about why you should all be playing more Idrians, and a repository for review stuff and the odd photodump. We won’t be returning to the daily posting schedule (at least, not at first), but to some extent, we’re baaaaack….
