  • GenCon 2015 Pt 1: Things Seen

Posted on August 12, 2015 7:00 am by gdaybloke 1 Comment

Although I was at Pennsic for the last two weeks, biggest event on the SCA calendar and all that jazz, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to take a side trip to GenCon, not only because it meant I would get to stay with Ninja Steve and his family again (who I totes heart), but also because it meant I’d get so see so many other cool folk who I hold near and dear, and score myself some shinies in the process. My wallet may never forgive me, mind you…

Every good gaming convention road trip should start with omnomnoms…

comiconlogoThere’s more than a handful of comic conventions in the Toronto area, but the largest on the calendar is FanExpo in the Summer. This isn’t it, but it’s put on by the same people, so… 😉 It’s basically a smaller scale Fan Expo. Still has some neat geek celebrities, but for my purposes, it’s perfect. Plenty of cosplayers and vendors, plenty of artists looking to sell their art skills and oh-so-keen to add to my Beta Ray Bill sketchbook… On Saturday I took Gdaygirl and her friend to  Toronto Comicon,  where they cosplayed for the very first time. They insisted that they needed to wander around without parental supervision, so I was – for a few hours – unsurpervized myself as I wandered the convention floor…

This is where it all began. Doctors 10 and 11. They had to borrow my sonic screwdrivers, but in the interests of making it an awesome day for them I was… willing… to let them wander with my precious, precious Whovian gadgets.

FanExpo part the Second! This time we’ve got a Cosplay photodump. For those who missed yesterday’s post, a reminder: This was the Gdaykid’s very first FanExpo and the expedition was more about them getting their inner geek’s on than covering the convention for bloggeration, so they appear in a whole bunch of the pics.

Deal with it. I’m a geek dad and proud of my geeklings.

Our first coplay photo was of this other fine geek dad and  his little sidekick, and points to one of the highlights of FanExpo this year. I saw more little kids in costume this year than I have in any previous, and it just warmed my heart seeing all these youngsters proudly engaging in cosplay adventures. I salute you, cosplaying geek dad.

As if the recent posts from GenCon weren’t enough (and I’m still not done with the product reviews et al), this last weekend saw PAX, NOVA and DragonCon appeasing the inner geek in all of us. Oh, and in the magical far off land of Toronto, Canada, there was a little ole’ thing called Fan Expo. It just happens to be Canada’s biggest Comic/SciFi/Anime/Horror/Gaming convention, and I usually like to attend if I’m able.

This year was something special because for the first time I was taking the Gdaykids with me. What this means for YOU, dear Losties, is that Gdayboy and Gdaygirl show up in a lot of the pics in the photodumps. They’re my progeny and I wub them, and it was neat to watch them get their geek on. Oh, yes, I said photodumps, plural. Today you get general convention experience and neat things seen, tomorrow you get pics of cosplayers.

    Enjoy!

  • Gday At GenCon: The First Bit

Alright, we’re going to cheat a little. The first few photos here are from stuff that happened before my Friday at GenCon, but they were part of kickstarting my GenCon experience, so they’re getting included.

Wednesday I was still in the office, and my phone  buzzed. It was a text from Faultimus Von Durmstrang. More significantly, it was a picture of his Press Gang coin. I was being challenged by text. It was 10AM and I was in the office, so Faultie was clearly hoping I would be coin-less and thus that I would owe him a beer at GenCon.

Dude, this thing lives in my wallet 24-7. Faultie owed me a beer. Also, I apparently hadn’t shaved that morning. Ladies.

  • Gday At GenCon: Cosplay Photodump

As anyone following the Twitter and Facebook feeds will be aware, I actually *was* at GenCon this past weekend! Hah, tricked you! I only managed to squeak in two of the four days, but it was an awesome experience in no small part thanks to Ninja Steve (and the Admiral) who played host, Faultie who played constant companion and guide to foods, and so many other very fine peeps including, but not limited to, the Privateer staffers who made their presence felt during my very first GenCon.

There’s going to be several posts based on the weekend’s shenanigans, including at least three photodumps, so I thought I’d get started with one of those.

I did NOT go to GenCon with the express intention of snapping pics of Cosplayers, and Lord knows there were dozens of excellent costumes that I didn’t snap any shots of, but here are some that caught my eye for one reason or another. Wheee!

Just for Lost pal Rich, it’s Aquaman and his (admittedly small) army of seahorses!
