My fondness for chibi miniatures is a known thing. I try to get a post highlighting a Super Dungeon Explore character up at least once every two weeks, I’ve dragged my copy to conventions, I still hold out hope of running a Super Dungeon Arena tournament some day, and Lord knows I backed the Super Dungeon Legends kickstarter.
Of course, I also backed Ninja All Stars. Is it an awesome game? I’ll let you know what I’ve played it. Is it chock full of awesome chibi models? Oh, my, yes… and includes a bonus for Super Dungeon Explore fans like myself.
Let’s open the box…
This is the special Kickstarter edition box, which is frankly enormous because it’s holding all the extra stuff.
Opening the box, I find… promotional materials for Relic Knights, which indicate that Ayu Beat is getting a relic of her own. I’m cool with this.
A pad of team sheets! Who loves a campaign with models gaining XP and stuff like that? I do!
A nicely bound manual, full of many pretty pics…
ALL THE TOKENS! Given how similar some of these images are, the colour of the token is going to mean more than the faces.
Sealed in with the tokens is the board. I haven’t cracked this just yet.
A box inside my box?? Madness!
Oooh, there’s all the things INSIDE the box! Also sneaky pic of the underside of the KS box.Very Donkey Kongesque.
POUR OUT ALL THE THINGS!
Each of the clans has a set of generic ninja. Their stats and abilities vary mildly, but essentially it’s the same models cast in different colours, for use in the base game. These will come with the retail version of the game as well.
I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure these models are cast from a harder plastic than the SDE models. The basic models come molded directly to their bases as well.
DICE AND CARDS! What do they do? I’ll let you know once I’ve read the rules. I will state, though, that the production value on these things is pretty darn nifty.
Sentries and lanterns… even the static board components are lovely. I love that even the sentries come in three different poses, rather than just all being the same guy.
Now, as shiny as that is, each clan also has its own characterful expansion.
Yamazaru – the Monkey Clan! My personal favourite…
Ijin – the Oni Clan! Got tetsubo?
Kitsune – the Fox Clan. Masters of Spirit…
Tora – the Tiger Clan! The only clan to have mastered firearms…
Tanchyo – the Crane Clan! Refinement of skill… and extra arrows
Ika – the Squid Clan! With their ink they seal your fate…
Extra heroes from the Kickstarter! One for each clan!
As if that was’t enough, the game also comes with a veritable horde of Ronin for you to hire…
MORE RONIN! Including a Kappa and a Tengu, because why not.
Possibly my favourite of the Ronin, the Ondori Clan Kaiken. Chicken ninja!!!
Two freaking enormous trophies, in case you win twice. Kunoichi Candy for scale.
As as mentioned, you can use a selection of the models in Super Dungeon Explore. The Shrines become spawn points for ninjas, an Oni as a miniboss, and three of the Ronin can be taken as heroes. Yes, they will end up on the painting table…
I’m excited for what Ninja All Stars has to offer. Aside from burying my painting queue in chibi ninja goodness, the game itself seems at first blush to be fun and characterful, and the built in campaign system is always an encouragement to push further with any game. I look forward to dragging the box to CaptainCon and kicking tires with all and sundry.
