Many of my friends are packing their cars and heading to Pennsylvania this weekend for Pennsic, the biggest event on the SCA calendar. I won’t lie, I’m a little jealous and more than a bit bummed that I can’t join in the fun this year. I’ve been the last two, and it’s a different world, a perfect snippet of escapism from the trials and tribulations of life in the mundane world. I sincerely wish all my Scadian friends who are going an amazing time, and look forward to hearing tales of all the fun had this year.
Now, while I won’t be going to THAT amazing event, thanks to NInja Steve and The Admiral I will again be gracing Indianapolis with my presence in a few weeks time for GenCon 50! Woot Woot!
Now the thing is, thanks to the vagaries of real life I need to be as budget conscious as I can be this year. So the question is… where do I focus my efforts? Being a magpie gamer as I am, with my fingers in many pies and being rapidly distracted by new shininess, I right now have Warmachine, Wild West Exodus, Warhammer 40K and Age of Sigmar, Relic Knights, Arena Rex and Shadowsea in the house, as well as Guild Ball, Blood Bowl, Super Dungeon Explore, Ninja All Stars and Krosmaster. I’m expecting Rail Raiders Infinite to land soon as well, just in case there weren’t enough chibis in the house already.
Then there’s the new Legend of the Five Rings card game dropping, a new expansion for Smash Up!, I haven’t picked up the Star Trek Ascendancy expansions yet, I should probably get a new sourcebook for the Dr Who RPG. What about Lovecraft Letter, or maybe the Bob Ross boardgame. The Walking Dead: No Sanctuary? Game of Thrones Catan? Fallout: Wasteland Warfare? Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Card Game? Legendary: Buffy? Hell, there’s even Codenames: Marvel and a new expansion for the Hogwarts Battle game.
Let’s be clear here, Privateer Press is my jam, and if Company of Iron is pre-released (we don’t know if it will be yet) and I don’t leave GenCon with a copy I will be a very sad panda indeed, but surely you don’t expect me to enjoy no new board games until Lords of Hellas drops for Christmas…
… and then Steamforged goes and drops teasers like these guys:
Now I need to decide what gaming I want to do, prepare lists, and maybe even (*gasp*) paint…
