  • Pedal to the Metal – It’s Heap.

As I sit here fighting the FOMO for Frosthaven, out of the corner of my eye I spot the recently painted Helga On Wheels, a Riot Quest model that I had a ridiculous amount of fun painting, and my mind wanders down post-apocalyptic paths to a game that I tried out sooo many years ago, which also featured a long-haired rough-and-tumble motorcyclist, along with his pals in their trucks, buggies and copters. I am, of course, referring to Heap, one Privateer Press’ Bodgers line of games.

Heap joined an established stable of pick-up-and-play games which included Scrappers and Infernal Machine, and later Zombies Keep Out, but Heap was always my favourite. Each player represented a small gang of gobbers in the aftermath of the apocalypse, squabbling and competing with other gangs to grab enough cool stuff from the massive junkyards of the futureto enhance their Doombuggies, Scrap Hogs, Gyrohoppers and Bigg Riggs and then to defeat their rivals.

  • Faultie at GenCon: One last Photodump

Posted on August 23, 2014 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

My constant companion while I was roaming the floors of GenCon was none of other than Faultimus Von Durmstrang. We ate together, we laughed together, he… ran off and did shifts in the Iron Arena, and stuff.

He also sent me all the pics he took during the convention, with no notes or commentary whatsoever, so I’m going to make things up as I go along. I’m pretty sure I’ve got most of these figured out…

Channeling his inner Batman, Faultie spent his first night in Indianapolis perched on a gargoyle and brooding about how annoying it is that Superman gets all the powers.

  • Gday At GenCon: The First Bit

Alright, we’re going to cheat a little. The first few photos here are from stuff that happened before my Friday at GenCon, but they were part of kickstarting my GenCon experience, so they’re getting included.

Wednesday I was still in the office, and my phone  buzzed. It was a text from Faultimus Von Durmstrang. More significantly, it was a picture of his Press Gang coin. I was being challenged by text. It was 10AM and I was in the office, so Faultie was clearly hoping I would be coin-less and thus that I would owe him a beer at GenCon.

Dude, this thing lives in my wallet 24-7. Faultie owed me a beer. Also, I apparently hadn’t shaved that morning. Ladies.

  • Night of the Noxious Dead

Posted on July 16, 2014 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Let’s take a moment to consider: You’ve been trapped in your workshop for days now. You can make some forays out during the daylight hours to try to get some food, but every night there’s a wall of moaning, shambling bodies shuffling across your back yard and trying to tear down the barriers you and your team have erected, thin slats of wood nailed in layers in an effort to keep you and your compatriots from becoming, shall we say, vitality challenged.

Now, after fending of the swarms night after night and desperately trying to assemble your defenses in those precious few hours you have after waking from fitful rest, you see the sun drop below the horizon and once more the guttural moans of the living dead drift through the yard, and… wait… what’s… Oh Gad! You gag and almost throw up a twinkie before you manage to strap a bandanna across your face to filter out the hideous aroma that has assailed you. The zombies smelt bad enough before, but this is a new level of aromatic hell.

It’s the Night of the Noxious Dead.

Yes, my friends, Privateer Press’ latest offering from their Bodgers line – Zombies Keep Out – has an expansion, and it’s a real stinker. By that I don’t mean that it’s bad, I mean that it’s themed around a new type of zombies that’s so aromatically challenged that even the other zombies won’t hang around with them. Naturally, they’re called Stinkers, and just to make it even more fun, the Stinker models glow in the dark.

Night of the Noxious Dead comes with a new contraptions for your Gobbers to build, new Parts cards to help you combat them, and new Terrible Things cards with which to add these revolting stench-emitting undead to your yard.

Of course, the only way to figure out what sort of impact the Stinkers will have on the game is to kick the tires and light the fires. To that end, Pal Anthony was recruited.

We quickly found that there was a new level of challenge to finding places to put Stinkers on the board that wouldn’t instantly result in a surge of other zombies trying to get away from them. Normally zombies shamble forward either due to a Terrible Things card or by being shoved by the advancing horde behind them. Add the Stinkers to the board and suddenly your Brutes, Creepers, Leapers and Runners get additional forward momentum as they try to get away from the foul stench of the newcomers.

This technique served us well for awhile, but then we were caught between a rock and a hard place – we had no option other than to trigger some shambling, and next thing you know we’ve got bodies crashing against out barricades as they surge forward two or three times – Back row zombies are shoved into the mobs in front of them and then even further and next thing you know our defenses are crumbling.

We did complete the Meganailer, but…

Too little too late. We were overrun.

Zombies Keep Out: Night of the Noxious Dead opens up your options with more gadgets and parts cards, and ramps up the shenanigans with a whole new category of zombies, intent on odiferous mayhem. If you’re all about fighting off swarms of the living dead in a lighthearted manner, check in with you FLGS and order a copy.

Privateer Press is known for its award-winning tabletop miniatures games and roleplaying supplements. Its products have depth that can resonate with the casual gamer just as strongly as with the hardcore competitive player, and with the hobbyist chained to his painting and modelling station… but sometimes we’re feeling a little whimsical, and sometimes we have younger players around us who may not be quite ready to wrap their heads around Tharn dietary habits, or be able to properly calculate in advance how many focus Terminus is going to have once he’s done his activation. For those times, for when we want to goof around with our pals or be a little silly with our young ones, Privateer maintains the Bodgers. Infernal Contraption, Heap, Scrappers and Bodgermania have made us familiar with the scrappy little team of Gobber McGuyvers and their wacky inventive nature. Do they maintain the flavor when they’ve got a horde of shambling zombies coming at them? Time to find out, with ZOMBIES KEEP OUT!
