I was hoping to be able to do an unboxing for the Warcaster: Neo-Mechanika goodies from the Kickstarter, but while I’m seeing any number of pics from giddy souls elsewhere on the continent, sadly there’s no tracking number yet for a box of Iron Star Alliance heading toward the Gdaycave. The anticipation of the arrival of the new shinies has had me thinking, though. While we’re all socially distancing and gaming together isn’t an option for those adhering to social distancing, it won’t be this way forever, and there’ll come a time when I’m in a position to host an opponent or two in the Gdaycave…

… but to host an opponent, one needs… an opponent.

The question is, then, how to encourage your fellow gamers to take up the game you want to play, or how to encourage your non-gamer friends to share your interest. Some people just aren’t into tabletop gaming, and that’s cool, but I know I’m looking forward to sharing tabletops again when we can, and if I can help some new people discover a new hobby, then I’m all for it.

When the Press Ganger program was running I made a point of dumping my PG Points into starter boxes and models that I could use to either run demos for new players, or to actively gift to enthusiastic newbies to help them start their collections. This sadly isn’t an option any more, and a new product like Warcaster doesn’t yet have the depth of lore or range of models that Warmachine & Hordes have, or any number of other games. Joys of being the new kid on the block.

While we have a very dynamic ruleset, we don’t yet have easy, ready access to all models, but we do have a setting we can share, and some super cool art pieces. It’ll be awhile before there are enough models out there to show prospective newbies, but if you can get your hands on two starters, paint ’em up, and you’ll have demo kits. From there you can showcase the game to your friends, how it plays, and mayhap point them at an FLGS or preferred online retailer so they can get some models if their interest is sufficiently piqued.

This train of thought may have been inspired by a recent article on Warhammer Community, but the same principles apply to any game system. The key to finding new opponents, regardless of your preferred flavor of toy soldiers, is you.

You’re in the position to be an ambassador not just for your chosen game, but for the way you like to play your chosen game. You can not only welcome new players into the lore and setting and ruleset of  your favourite game, you can also show them the different ways the game can be enjoyed. Want opponents for tense, edge-of-your-seat, mentally challenging nailbiters? Want opponents for relaxed, beer-and-pretzels nights of seeing who can roll the most dice? Wherever you fall on the spectrum, I encourage you to play the game the way you love to play, and in doing so share what you love about your games. Be mindful that a different aspect may appeal to your newbies, but with a bit of luck you’ll find a kindred spirit, and make a new friend… who will also turn out to be your fondest enemy. Yeah, Spud, I’m looking at you 😉

  • Warcaster: Iron Star Alliance troops

Posted on July 6, 2020 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

Good citizens! The Iron Star Alliance is the pinnacle of interstellar government, offering you peace and security and stability! All that we ask is your compliance. Don’t be like those dirty Marcher Worlds Coalition anarchists. Why, some of them don’t even shave! Washing their hands after using the restroom is merely a suggestion to them, not enforced for the sake of public safety like it is in the Alliance core worlds. Don’t you want to be safe from the evils of poor hygiene and unsanitary habits? Compliant citizens have nothing to fear from the Paladin squads, who are dedicated to your well-being. It is advised that you heed their instructions at all times.

The troops of the Iron Star Aliance are clean, regimented, and frankly, a little sinister. I dig the aesthetic, clean armor plates accented with glowie points all over the place. In the end I went with a scheme not too dissimilar to the studio scheme, but rather than carrying the orange glow throughout the model I decided to restrict it to the arc receivers and a few additional points, going with a blue glow otherwise. Imagine being a Continuum agent, thinking your all safe in your rodent-infested hideaway, when suddenly a smoke grenade pops, filling the room, and all you can see is vague silhouettes and points of blue light. It’s a little bit alien invasion, a little bit time to pay for your crimes against the Alliance…

  • Warcaster: Marcher Worlds

Posted on June 24, 2020 7:00 am by gdaybloke Comment

I’ve spoken with my superiors at Iron Star Alliance High Command and we’re all in agreement that the coalition of anarchists and ne’er-do-wells that make up the Marcher Worlds are probably highly prone to returning library books way past their due dates, drinking milk right from the carton, and squeezing toothpaste tubes in the middle. They’re also one of the three factions launching Privateer Press’ Warcaster: Neo-Mechanika, which will soon be funneling out to Kickstarter backers and making their way onto shelves.

As much as I’m loathe to spread the fame of the Marcher Worlds insurgents, I’ve been instructed to provide the following images so that all true loyalists and adherents of the Iron Star Alliance, responsible for the peace and prosperity of humanity as a species among the stars, can identify these dangerous individuals and report them to the authorities accordingly.

In other, completely unrelated news, these gorgeous models were painted by Lost pal Pat, who showcases his work on Facebook at The Artisan’s Edge and on Instagram at @artisansedge.

  • FanExpo Canada Photodump2: The Cosplayers

Posted on September 3, 2014 7:00 am by gdaybloke 2 Comments

FanExpo part the Second! This time we’ve got a Cosplay photodump. For those who missed yesterday’s post, a reminder: This was the Gdaykid’s very first FanExpo and the expedition was more about them getting their inner geek’s on than covering the convention for bloggeration, so they appear in a whole bunch of the pics.

Deal with it. I’m a geek dad and proud of my geeklings.

Our first coplay photo was of this other fine geek dad and  his little sidekick, and points to one of the highlights of FanExpo this year. I saw more little kids in costume this year than I have in any previous, and it just warmed my heart seeing all these youngsters proudly engaging in cosplay adventures. I salute you, cosplaying geek dad.
